Since this procedure is irreversible – and the eyes are a key feature in how we perceive a person – it should be carefully considered.
RISKS
Tattooing the sclera is a highly delicate procedure due to the sensitivity of the eye and the importance of vision.
It must be approached with great care and precision.
A key concern is the risk of infection following the procedure.
It is crucial to keep the eyes and surrounding area clean at all times.
In addition to infection, there may be bleeding, scarring, nodule formation, or allergic reactions.
There is also a risk of increased intraocular pressure, the development of glaucoma, or necrosis.
In the worst case, loss of vision or the entire eye may occur.
Keep in mind that the natural color of the sclera is also used as a diagnostic indicator in medicine.
Diseases that cause discoloration of the sclera may go unnoticed or be detected too late.
Just like with “regular” tattoos, eyeball tattoos can result in so-called blow-outs – this means that pigment spreads into the surrounding connective tissue.
This cannot be reversed, and we do our best to minimize the risk.
Due to the relatively recent development of this body modification, long-term effects have not yet been researched.
