BODY-MODIFICATION
BODY-MODIFICATION
Body modification (English for “body alteration”, also abbreviated as “BodMod”; German: Körperschmuck) refers to a variety of alterations performed on the human body, today mostly carried out by specialized commercial providers.
In contrast to other forms of body design, which achieve changes through surface painting or training, body modifications involve invasive procedures that affect the substance of the human body (the skin, and in some cases underlying cartilage and fatty tissue) and result in permanent or difficult-to-reverse changes.
Body adornment includes tattoos, piercings, implants, as well as brandings, scarification, and other forms of decorative scarring. Body adornment can be considered a subcategory of body design. Today, however, the term is largely used for all body modifications (except tattoos).
