WATCH OUT WHEN GETTING AN EYEBALL TATTOO

You see them more and more often: tattooed eyeballs. We offer this form of body modification in our studio, and we are also noticing that demand is slowly but steadily increasing. Few body modifications attract as much attention as a colored sclera. Since this procedure is not reversible and the eyes are a key feature in a person’s perception, it should definitely be carefully considered.

PROCESS & TECHNIQUE

Contrary to what the term “eyeball tattoo” suggests, the color is not applied to the eye using a tattoo machine. The coloring of the eyes is achieved through injection. There is a wide range of colors and color combinations available, however the distribution of the colors cannot be controlled. The result is individual.

RISKS

Tattooing the sclera, due to the sensitivity of the eye and the importance of vision, is a procedure that requires a careful and focused approach.

The risk of infection after the procedure is particularly noteworthy. Therefore, it is important that the eyes and the surrounding area remain clean. In addition to infections, bleeding, scarring, nodule formation, or allergic reactions may occur. An increase in intraocular pressure with the development of glaucoma and necrosis may also occur. In the worst case, there is a risk of losing vision or the eyeball.

Also keep in mind that the natural color of the sclera serves as a diagnostic indicator. This means that diseases which manifest through color changes in the sclera may not be detected, or may only be detected at a late stage.

As with “normal” tattoos, so-called blow-outs can also occur with eyeball tattoos. This means that ink enters the surrounding connective tissue. This is not reversible, and we strive to minimize this risk as much as possible.

Long-term effects have not yet been studied due to the novelty of this body modification.
