STRETCHING

WITH A LITTLE PATIENCE EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE

FROM SMALL TO BIG

Stretching refers to the enlargement of a fully healed piercing channel in order to insert thicker jewelry. This is done for aesthetic reasons and for comfort. Piercings should only be stretched once they are completely healed (epithelialized). If stretching is started too early, tissue tears can occur. This can significantly delay or impair the normal healing process. Unpleasant complications such as blowouts, infections, etc. may occur.

TRADITION

Piercing stretching is as old as piercing itself. The origin of almost all forms of stretching can be found in indigenous cultures. Ear and lip stretching has been practiced by numerous ethnic groups and cultures for thousands of years.

In addition to the decorative function of piercings, it was also used to emphasize distinction from other tribes. The symbolic representation of a transformation process, such as initiation into the community of men, played an important role alongside spiritual rituals.

Records of stretched ear piercings and lip plugs can be found in Aztec artifacts, Buddha depictions, Olmec sculptures, the death mask of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun, as well as in many cultures from Central America and Africa.

STRETCHING PROCESS

To avoid unnecessary stress on the tissue, each stretching step should not exceed 1 mm. We recommend waiting at least 4 weeks between stretches, as only a slowly stretched piercing will also be able to shrink back again if this is desired at some point.

Every person is different, and therefore the rule that a piercing will close back up to 6 mm does not apply to everyone.

MATERIAL FOR STRETCHING

The correct material should be used for stretching.

During stretching, micro-tears form in the skin through which substances and bacteria can enter. Therefore, only jewelry with a smooth surface that can be disinfected and contains as few harmful substances as possible should be used.

If no complications occur during stretching, all materials (of the same diameter) can be used after 2–3 weeks.

SUITABLE MATERIALS
  • TITANIUM OR STEEL
  • GLAS
  • PTFE
  • ACRYL
NOT SUITABLE MATERIALS:
  • SILICONE

ODOR DEVELOPMENT

ODOR DEVELOPMENT

The larger the stretched piercing becomes, the more the jewelry and the stretched area may start to develop an unpleasant odor. This is caused by the buildup of dead skin cells.

To avoid this, the jewelry should be cleaned regularly with antibacterial soap, or jewelry made of materials such as wood, horn, or acrylic can be worn instead. This helps prevent odor from developing.

AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING STRETCHING

With every stretching step, invisible micro-tears can occur, which must be disinfected for 2–3 days.

To support the healing process, you will find here a concise summary of the aftercare instructions that have already been discussed with the piercer.

To ensure that the wound heals as quickly and without complications as possible, we kindly ask you to carry out the aftercare carefully.

WOUND CARE

Always wash or disinfect your hands before aftercare

Spray both the jewelry and the entry site with Prontolind

NORMAL SKIN REACTION AFTER STRETCHING
