A DEFINING EXPERIENCE
ART IN THE SKIN
„Scarification“ (from Latin scarificatio/scarifatio, meaning scratching or scarifying) refers to the creation of decorative scars on the skin. Depending on the method, the terms cutting or branding are also used.

The application of decorative scars is deeply rooted in the traditions of various African cultures and is likely the oldest form of body modification. It is especially common among groups whose dark skin tone does not allow for tattoos or where tattoos would be barely visible. Many people are familiar with scars as adornment or as a marker of tribal affiliation among various indigenous peoples (e.g., in Africa).
In Western cultures, scars are typically associated only with injuries. Scarification is not about scars from head wounds or cuts down to the bone, but rather about artistic skin embellishments. Key requirements for a successful result are experience, anatomical knowledge, and above all, precise and hygienic work.
TECHNIQUE
Cutting with a scalpel is the most technically advanced and professional way to create precise scars. The scalpel allows for very fine and controlled incisions.
Depending on the desired design, the skin is either incised to the dermis layer or larger areas of skin are removed (skin removal).
LANGER’S LINIS
The body is crisscrossed by natural tension lines in the skin, known as Langer’s lines. These mark the direction in which the skin has the least stretch. Incisions made along these lines gape less than cuts made across them.
When performing a cutting, Langer’s lines significantly affect scar formation. Some areas of the body are under greater tension, which can result in scars with uneven width. This should be considered when choosing both the design and the body area.

PAIN DURING CUTTING
Scarification is one of the most intense experiences in body modification. Everyone has an individual pain threshold, so pain is felt differently by each person.
You should not take any drugs, medications, or alcohol 24 hours before or after the cutting, as they can intensify the sensation of pain. Pain is generally more bearable if you’ve eaten well and are rested and fit beforehand.
In a hygienic yet relaxed and welcoming environment, you can trust that we’ll help calm your nerves – and that you’ll leave our studio with a smile, proud of your new cutting.

NARBENGEWEBE
In the beginning, scar tissue is rich in blood vessels and appears red. As healing progresses, the blood vessels recede, while the amount of collagen fibers increases. This increases the tear resistance of the scar, but also makes it appear lighter than the surrounding skin, as the scar tissue lacks pigment cells (at least temporarily, and in some cases permanently). Despite the high collagen content, a scar is still considered inferior tissue.
(Excerpts from wikipedia.org) Scar formation depends on many factors.
The type of scar tissue varies depending on the body area. It’s difficult to predict the final result beforehand. Most scars start off deep but become more raised over time, eventually developing into the desired decorative scar. The scar may become raised or remain flat, and can continue to change in appearance.
Aftercare has a major influence on the final outcome. The final result is usually visible only after 6 to 12 months.
Proper care and treatment of the fresh scarification is by far the most important part in achieving a successful result. Since the wound is large and open, there is an increased risk of infection – which is why hygiene is essential throughout the entire healing phase. To achieve a clear and pronounced scar, the wound must be deliberately irritated under sterile conditions. The type, duration, and intensity of this irritation affects the final scar. The longer and more intense the irritation, the more scar tissue will form. This process is often accompanied by varying degrees of itching.
